5 Tips for Preventing Purse Snatching

On average, about 1,000 purses and wallets are stolen every two minutes in the U.S. alone! When you have errands to run and things to do while you’re out, the last thing you want to be worrying about is your purse getting snatched! Here are 5 tips to help you stay safe while you’re out, and reduce your chances of having your purse snatched.

Tip 1: Be cautious and aware

When it comes to any type of crime, most predators seek out the distracted and defenseless. Criminals are looking for an easy target who won’t see them coming and won’t have time to react. When you are out or walking back to your car, be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes up from your phone, and be cautious before going to your car.

Tip 2: Leave your purse at home, if you can

Instead of bringing a purse with you, consider using an ID holder that you can easily attach to your keys. Carry your credit card, cash, and ID in the ID holder, and leave your purse at home. This is useful for quick trips to the store, or places where you might not need your entire bag.

Tip 3: If you must bring a bag, keep it close to your body

A purse that is hanging out in the shopping cart while you unload your groceries, or far from your body is an easy target to a purse snatcher. By keeping it close to your body this will make it harder to steal, making you less of a target.

Tip 4: Report suspicious activity

If someone is following you to your car, or you think they are behaving suspiciously, don’t be afraid to contact the store’s security or even call the police. Calling your local Crime Stoppers might seem like an extreme move, but you could be saving someone else from becoming a purse snatching victim.

Tip 5: Be informed

Be aware and informed of the area you will be visiting before you leave your house. If you are going to be stopping in a less than pleasant neighborhood, you may want to consider bringing your expensive handbag with you. If you are not sure about an area you are visiting, do your research before you leave.
