5 Small Habits That Will Change Your Marriage

Big gestures are a great way to show your spouse just how much they mean to you. However, big gestures stop being big after a while, and they can get pretty expensive! Whether your marriage is in a great place or it’s a little rocky, you can never stop working on and improving. Here are 5 small habits that will change your marriage.

5 Small Habits That Will Change Your Marriage

1. See your spouse off when they leave

Whether they are headed to the store, or leaving for work, see them out when they go. Give them a quick hug and a kiss before they leave and let them know how much you love them. This is such a small gesture, but will mean so much to your spouse! Take the time to do this every time someone leaves the house, and you’ll start to see a big difference.

2. Go to bed at the same time

This one might be tricky if you have a spouse who works the night shift, or if you guys are just on different wavelengths when it comes to your schedule. Unless you work opposite shifts, this one is a must! This small simple task will draw you closer as a couple, plus you may even find you can be more intimate if you are in the same place at the same time. If you can’t remember the last time you cuddled together before you went to bed, this will solve that problem!

3. Learn your spouse’s Love Language

This one might sound like less of habit and more like a chore, but trust me, this will change your marriage! Knowing your spouse’s primary Love Language can help you express your love on their terms. If they are seeking Quality Time and you typically give them gifts, while a sweet gesture, they may not feel loved. For years, my husband was cleaning the kitchen to show his love for me (his primary Love Language is Acts of Service), but since mine is Quality Time, I was always disappointed! Taking the assessment and implementing made us both feel so much more loved.

4. Communicate with your spouse

Whether you spent too much at the grocery store (or Target!) or you just need to get something off your chest, communicate is so important in a marriage. Sit down with your spouse and schedule time to communicate together every day. This can be through a Q&A session such as highs and lows, or you can just talk about your day and see where that takes you.

5. Never stop dating your spouse

Although we found it hard to manage at times — kids are not an excuse to stop doing date nights. Our kids went through a season where they went to bed so much easier and slept better if we laid them down, so we switched up our date night to eat dinner with them and then go out dancing after they were asleep.

If you can’t afford a date out, have a date night at home while your kids are in bed or swap nights with another mom. Never stop dating your spouse, and look for something a little more exciting than dinner and a movie. Keep a jar of date night ideas close by for inspiration and pull one out of the jar to make date nights more exciting. Schedule at least one date night a week to ensure that you’re always making time for your spouse.

If you take on these five small habits and incorporate them into your marriage, they will go such a long way! What are you waiting for? Get out there and get started!
